How to Format a USB Drive for Shared Use Between Mac and PC

When it comes to sharing external hard drives between Macs and PCs, formatting the drive as FAT32 is often the best way to go. This file system is supported by both Mac OS X and Windows operating systems, making it a universal choice for cross-platform compatibility.

However, there are some limitations to consider when using FAT32. For one, Mac OS X won't let you create a partition larger than 2TB, so if your drive is bigger than that, you'll need to divide the available space into multiple partitions. Additionally, Windows 7 can't read and write to drives formatted as HFS+, also known as Mac OS Extended (journaled), unless you install third-party software.

On the other hand, Macs running Snow Leopard or Lion can read from NTFS-formatted drives, but they can't write to them without installing a third-party driver or using the Terminal. Windows prefers to use NTFS, which stands for New Technology File System, and has been around for nearly 20 years now.

Another limitation of FAT32 is that it imposes a size limit of 4GB on single files. This means that if you work with bulky video clips, for example, adopting FAT32 may not be the best idea.

Despite these limitations, FAT32 enjoys nearly universal support from active platforms, including Mac and Windows operating systems, as well as many gaming and Linux OSs. When formatting a partition, Windows 7's Disk Management utility won't let you create one that's larger than 32GB, whereas Mac OS X Lion can create partitions as large as 2TB using its Disk Utility application.

To format a USB drive on your Mac, follow these steps:

1. Open the Applications folder and select Utilities.

2. Double-click on the Disk Utility icon to open it.

3. Select the USB drive from the list of available devices on the left-hand side of the window.

4. Click on the 'Erase' button at the top of the window.

5. A dialog box will appear asking you to confirm that you want to erase the drive. Click on 'OK' to proceed.

6. Select the type of format you want from the drop-down menu.

7. If the USB flash drive contains sensitive data, click on the 'Security' tab and select how securely you want the files to be deleted.

Once you've completed these steps, your USB drive will be formatted as FAT32 and ready for use with both Macs and PCs.
